WARNING! ENDANGERED SPECIES!
The Red Book is a document that describes the status of species that occur in a given area - for example, Bulgaria, the Black Sea, Europe, etc. Its covers are usually red to draw people's attention to the danger of species extinction, hence its name.
The Red Book of the Republic of Bulgaria is a list of threatened, endangered and extinct species living on the territory of Bulgaria. The idea of publishing a Red Book was of the eminent zoologist Nikolay Boev, and its first edition dates back to 1984. Thus, we became one of the first countries in Europe to publish such a scientific work. The interest in the book was so great that in less than two years all the copies were sold out, and then became an antiquarian rarity. There is now a second edition of the Red Book of Threatened Plant and Animal Species in Bulgaria (from 2012). The species described in it are priority species for conservation in the European Natura 2000 project, which is mandatory for Bulgaria.
Today the Red Book is divided into three volumes:
Volume I - Plants and Fungi,
Volume II - Animals (vertebrates and invertebrates)
Volume III - Habitats.
Currently, the list includes 808 species of plants and fungi, 287 species of animals and 166 habitat types. The species are divided into 7 threat categories: extinct, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, slightly affected and data deficient.
The Red Book is the result of years of work by over 200 scientists, specialists and conservationists from all over the country. Bulgaria is the sixth country in the world to have collected endangered plants, animals and habitats in a Red Data Book. The Red Data Book lists 2 roundmouth and 22 bony fishes.
