Splendor of colors and wings in the natural history museum

Alive tropical butterflies are the latest attraction that the Natural-History Museum of Burgas offers to the visitors this season. They were released today, 31.07.2014, in one of the halls of the museum, located in Burgas on 30 K.Fotinov St.

Nearly 50 butterflies of 11 different species fly freely in the hall of the museum, arranged as a tropical garden with suitable for them plants, provided by the company Burgastsvet-90-Tanev OOD.

Similar initiatives are already practiced in major European museums and botanical gardens, but in Burgas it is organized for the very first time. Alive butterflies recently visited for a day the Bulgarian Parliament in Sofia, but of course the museum is much more suitable home for this splendor.

If you want to find out why, come and visit us to discover the information boards and materials, specially made for the exhibition.

For the convenience of visitors to the Natural History Museum of Burgas works with extended summer working time: Monday - Friday 9:00 to 19:00, Saturday - 11:00 to 19:00.

Additional information:
Butterflies have fascinated people since ancient times. It is no accident that they were found depicted in Egyptian tomb aged 3500 years. There are almost no nations who have no legend or tradition associated with butterflies. Butterflies and moths make up a large group of insects known as the Order Lepidoptera. The name comes from the Greek "lepido" meaning scale and "ptera" - wing and refers to the tiny scales that cover the wings. The intricate designs of butterfly wings are produced by thousands of scales in different colours, overlapping one another like shingles on a roof. There are more than 250 000 known species of Lepidoptera. In Bulgaria their number is about 3700. Generally they are divided in butterflies (about 215 species in Bulgaria) and moths (about 3500 species). Many species are threatened and protected by laws, conventions and Red Data Books.
