Premiere of the book "Byzantine ceramics from the Bulgarian Black Sea coast (VIII - XIV century AD)" in Ethnographic Museum - Burgas

On December 4, Monday, at 17:30, the book "Byzantine Ceramics from the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast" will be presented at the Ethnographic Museum - Burgas (69 Slavyanska St.). The premiere will be accompanied by a presentation. The author of the monograph is Dr. Maria Manolova-Voykova, Director of the Archaeological Museum - Varna and Associate Professor at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum - Shumen Branch. This is a fundamental work on the most massive finds discovered during archaeological excavations. It is the first time in Bulgarian scientific literature that Byzantine ceramics from the 8th century are presented and analysed in detail.
Associate Professor Maria Manolova-Voykova is a leading researcher of medieval ceramics in the Balkans. She is the author of nearly 100 scientific studies and articles, mainly related to the ceramics of Byzantium and the Middle Ages. She has taught at Varna Free University and specialized in Byzantine studies in Vienna. She has led research at two of Bulgaria's landmark archaeological sites - the medieval capital of Veliki Preslav and the Petrich Kale fortress near Varna. Consultant on medieval ceramics at excavations in Varna, Kastritsi, Anhiallo, Deultum, Aquae Calidae and many others.
The monograph is the result of Maria Manolova's 20-year research on Byzantine ceramics from the Bulgarian Black Sea coast during the Middle Ages. Nearly 850 ceramic vessels from 15 museum collections from Kavarna, Balchik, Dobrich, Varna, Nessebar, Pomorie, Burgas, Sozopol, etc. are presented in an extremely comprehensive manner. They are classified into 32 categories, for each of which a wealth of information is presented regarding the technology of manufacture and the characteristic decorative features. The analysis is accompanied by a commentary on the chronology of the identified ceramic types and the known data on their origin. The geographical range of the Byzantine imports in the Black Sea region and in the interior of the Bulgarian lands is traced. To the finds with a securely established origin in the Byzantine territories are added types that were produced in the Black Sea settlements in the period from the 12th to the 14th centuries and adhere to the set technological and aesthetic norms of Byzantine ceramics - a particularly valuable contribution in which local production of luxury goods has been identified with certainty. The study covers 13 settlements of the coastal zone and outlines their trade contacts during the 8th - 14th centuries.
The book is aimed at a wide range of students and specialists - archaeologists, historians, art historians and collectors who are interested in Byzantine art and culture on the Western Black Sea coast during the Middle Ages.
