Opening of the exhibition "Argonauts of Freedom - Garibaldi and the Bulgarians"

On February 6, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., the exhibition "Argonauts of Freedom - Garibaldi and the Bulgarians" will be opened in the Historical Museum at 31 Lermontov Street. The title was not chosen by chance - this is the definition that Giuseppe Garibaldi himself gave to his fighters during the "March of a Thousand". Visiting the thematic exhibition is dedicated to 146 years since the liberation of Burgas and Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The mobile exhibition was created by the Museum of the Renaissance in the city of Varna with the assistance of Mr. Antonio Tarquinio, honorary consul of Italy for Varna, Burgas, Rousse and Shumen, who will attend the event in the Burgas museum, together with the authors.
In eight different panels, visitors will find information about Bulgarians, followers of Garibaldi, as well as Italians - Garibaldi, who later connected their lives with Bulgaria.Among the selected exhibits are an Italian tricolor from Garibaldi's company from 1860, photographs of Giuseppe Garibaldi himself, as well as Bulgarians - participants in the Garibaldi movement - Georgi Rakovski, Dimitar Obshti, Hadji Dimitar and Captain Petko Voivoda. Inspired by the personality of Garibaldi and on the occasion of the exhibition, the Italian artist Alessandro Chiarappa painted a portrait of the great revolutionary. This portrait remains a gift for the Bulgarians, showing once again the mutual respect and affection between the two peoples - Italian and Bulgarian. Simultaneously with the portrait of Garibaldi, Chiarappa painted another portrait - of Vasil Levski. Both portraits are painted using the same technique.
Another highlight are the personal belongings of Pascal Stanini - Italian - Garibaldi, who lived in Bulgaria after the Liberation and worked as a railway employee. the Ruse - Varna line. They were provided by his great-granddaughter Letitia Atanasova.
The exhibition will be visiting the Burgas Historical Museum until the end of March 2024.
