"Old Burgas through the eyes of Dr. Melkonyan"

On 15 May 2024 (Wednesday) at 17:00 at the Ethnographic Museum (69 Slavyanska Street) will be opened the exhibition "Old Burgas through the eyes of
Dr. Melkonyan". It presents significant Burgas places, events, known and unknown people from that romantic and at the same time dynamic, colorful and recognizable city. Interesting moments from the then life - quotes from Dr. Mugardich Stepan Melkonyan's manuscript "Burgas - my hometown. Memories of the time from 1930 to 1945" are supported by relevant photos, documents and exhibits from the collection of the Burgas Museum, from the family and personal archives of Burgas residents, as well as provided by the heirs of Dr. Melkonyan.
The exhibition also tells the story of Mugardich Melkonyan himself - an Armenian born in Burgas in January 1922, a shoemaker, a doctor who has described Burgas in the past in detail and conscientiously, methodically and lovingly. "It is my wish that after reading it the most vivid picture of reality will appear..." - he has shared.
It seems strange to us today, but he edited and copied his memoirs in his own hand fourteen times! Fourteen thick notebooks, painstakingly scribbled out to be known, to be remembered. Two of the manuscripts have been given by him personally to the Department of Ethnography and the Department of History at the Regional Historical Museum in Burgas.
The exhibition is part of a project of the same name of RHM Burgas, approved and funded by the Ministry of Culture.
In June of this year the official presentation of the book - the manuscript, which the museum will publish, will take place.
