The Ethno Weekend at the Ethnographic Museum begins with a thematic talk about herbs

Midsummer is approaching - a holiday from the traditional Bulgarian calendar dedicated to healing herbs and flowers. On this occasion, from the 21st to the 24th of June, our city will become even more colorful, and the reason for this are the series of interesting events that are coming up in the Burgas Ethnographic Museum. The beginning of the Ethno Weekend, which is organized by the Municipality of Burgas and the Regional Historical Museum in the city, will start on June 21, 2024 (Friday) at 17:30 with an interesting thematic lecture in the Ethnographic Exposition at 69 Slavyanska Street. Rositsa Topalova - curator in the Department of Ethnography will present the lecture with a presentation "Enchanting Herbs". She discusses legends about herbs, their presence in traditional Bulgarian ritual and their symbolism in folk ideas - what qualities people attribute to herbs, besides their medicinal properties. What do we do to enchant the young man we want; how do we protect ourselves from infidelity and which plants are in eternal dispute and competition, according to folk songs? Enchanted herbs and maiden's tresses will be talked about in the context of Midsummer and the magical night before the holiday, when every divination comes true.
On Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Ethnographic Exposition will be presented the custom of Enyova Bulya. The singing group "Fakiyski Bialki" at the Pensioners' Club "Zdravets", village of Fakiya will introduce us to the magic of Midsummer, to the singing and calling of the maiden's wrists, to the weaving of the Midsummer wreath. The custom was restored in the village around the year 2000. The singing group participates in many festivals in the country - in Koprivshtitsa, Popovo, Varna, Aitos, Sredets and others.
On June 23, 2024 (Sunday) at 10:30 in the Ethno-kitchen of the Burgas Museum on 69 Slavyanska Street, Antoaneta Stancheva will cook turligyuvech - in a clay pot, on a slow fire.
Antoaneta Stancheva is currently the director of the History Museum in Dimitrovgrad, but she is a professional actress, whom we remember from Rangel Valchanov's film "And Now Where?" She enthusiastically accepted to participate in the Midsummer Weekend organized by Burgas Municipality and Burgas Museum.
And the turlough is a mix. In its metaphorical meaning - of views, of opinions, of people. In a direct sense, it is a popular and very tasty dish with an irresistible aroma, made of different vegetables, with or without meat. The obligatory ingredients are: onions, okra, peppers, zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, and of course, potatoes. We will follow the recommendation of one kilo of meat per three kilos of vegetables. Serve hot, generously sprinkled with fresh parsley.
On Midsummer's Day itself - 24 June 2024 (Monday) at 10:00 we will weave the museum's big Midsummer wreath of seventy-seven and a half herbs. Every year the healing herbs for it are picked not by barefoot maidens in white robes, but by our artist and restorer Ivan Arabadzhiev. Only he knows where the biggest tufas with gentian are, and it is the most important because it has many healing properties, purifies and has the magical power to drive away dragons. Ivan loves nature, the mysteries, roams the fields and forests, knows how to identify birds and plants with their Latin names, can feel the charm of geranium, basil, blush, marigold, St. John's wort, yarrow, blue cornflower... A true John Bilober!
Welcome to the courtyard of the Ethnographic Exposition on ul. "Slavyanska" 69, to go through the wreath of herbs and flowers for good health and well-being throughout the year!
