On 17 October, Tuesday, at 17:30 in Georgi Baev Hall of the Cultural Center “Sea Casino”, a lecture will be given on the 838th anniversary of the uprising of the brothers Peter and Asen, which restored the independent Bulgarian kingdom. The lecturer will be one of the best experts of this event - Prof. Dr. Plamen Pavlov from the University of Veliko Tarnovo " "St. St. Cyril and Methodius".
Prof. Plamen Pavlov is the author of more than 500 specialized scientific monographs, studies, articles and communications. He is a lecturer and one of the leading Bulgarian historians. He was Director of the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad in the period 1998 - 2002. He is a prominent publicist, poet and public figure. Laureate of the Order of St. He is a laureate of the Order of St. Cyril and Methodius - 1st degree.
In the autumn of 1185 the brothers Theodore, who remained in history with his royal name Peter, and his brother Ivan Asen, called by the descendants "the old Asen", took the risky path to freedom. In the spring of the following year, 1186, the lands of "Hemus" became the focus of another liberation uprising. The first to rise were the Bulgarians around Anchialos (now Pomorie), a territory where an old Bulgarian population had lived for centuries. Thanks to their courage, unity and strong political will, our ancestors restored their independent state, which perished in 1018. The struggle with the mighty Roman Empire was by no means easy and full of optimistic forecasts - on the contrary! The Byzantine army dealt heavy blows to the rebels, and in the summer of 1186, Emperor Isaac Angel even managed to temporarily capture Tarnovo!
Hardly anyone in the imperial capital, and in Europe at the time, had assumed that in just a quarter of a century Bulgaria would return to "big politics". What is more, it would prevail in the ruthless duel with the Romans, defeat the victorious knights of the Fourth Crusade, its territories would once again rest on three seas, and it would achieve the greatness of Simeon's Bulgaria as the pre-eminent factor in Southeastern Europe.
But what is the background to the revolt? Who were the brothers Peter, Assen and Kaloyan? Who were the Asthenarians who incited the population to revolt? These and many other questions will be answered during the lecture. Brand new data will be presented that cannot be found in history textbooks.
The event is organized by the Regional Historical Museum - Burgas, Burgas Municipality and Cultural Center "Sea Casino" - Burgas.
