Archaeologists have uncovered part of the fortress wall of Aquae calidae near the road Vetren - Banevo

The archaeological excavations in Aquae calidae during 2018 covered two parts of the territory of the ancient city. The first was related to the continuation of archaeological research at the northern end of the baths. Works on this site began in 2012 but was stopped until the excavations in the southeastern part were completed and freed for conservation and restoration.

In the autumn of 2018, a rescue study was carried out in relation to EVN's investment intentions around the Vetren-Banevo road. A team of archaeologists lead by Assoc. prof. Dimcho Momchilov, assistant Miroslav Klasakov and consultant Assoc. Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski, discovered a massive fortification facility from XI-XIII century, built in connection with the invasions of pechenegs or kumans.

The substructure of a large archaeological structure, similar to a circular or U-shaped fortress tower built during the late Antiquity or early Byzantine period, was revealed.

In 2019, the studies in Aquae calidae will continue with the support of Burgas Municipality. Visitors to the site will be given the opportunity to observe the work of archaeologists from a very close but protected area. New walkways provide access to the remains of the ancient baths and allow tourists to experience their true scale.
