Some of the most successful archaeological investigations of Aquae Calidae are underway

Another survey of the famous ancient and medieval city of Aquae Calidae began on 4 September. It is carried out after the necessary funding and assistance from the Municipality of Burgas through the Regional Historical Museum - Burgas.
The research is concentrated in the north-northeastern interior of the early Byzantine bath. The present picture from the investigations presents a rich range of early Byzantine and medieval architecture and materials.
Since the location of the calderarium was established in 2022, it has now been definitively revealed in the current archaeological season in a relatively well-preserved condition with a thick hydrophobic plaster. In parallel, the opening of the hypocaust room and the ancient canal is continuing. The finds discovered: a fragment of a votive tablet with a dedicatory inscription, fine terracottas, parts of lamps, coins, once again confirm its active use already in Antiquity, which is associated with the presence of a nymphaeum in this area. Of the large amount of coin material from Antiquity and the Early Byzantine period, coins from the 4th century again dominate.
The team's efforts are also focused on the discovery of the pool detected in 2022 within the reach of the ancient drift, used until recently and later concreted over.
An entirely new development in this year's archaeological campaign is the identification of several medieval dwellings above the early Byzantine structures. They show a dense development and intensive life from the late 12th - early 12th century. The majority of a medieval drainage system consisting of two shafts and pipework was also uncovered. Synchronous ceramic art materials were also recovered with sgraffito pottery, a seal and numerous coins predominating.
In a later period, a necropolis was developed in the northern part of the Early Byzantine bath over Late Antique (Early Byzantine) and Medieval structures.
