The exhibition “Hope for Bulgarian Freedom – The Life and Work of St. Sophrony of Vratsa” will open on 6 February at 12:00 noon at the Ethnographic Museum, located at 69 Slavyanska Street in Burgas.
The exhibition explores the life and work of St. Sophrony of Vratsa, a prominent Bulgarian clergyman, man of letters, and author of Nedelnik (1806), the first printed book in Modern Bulgarian, as well as the autobiographical work The Life and Sufferings of Sinful Sophrony.
In addition to interpretive information panels, visitors will have the opportunity to view original editions of Nedelnik, along with other rare and valuable books and manuscripts from the collections of the Museum of the Bulgarian National Revival in Varna and the Regional Historical Museum – Burgas. One of the most remarkable exhibits is a bookbinding made personally by Sophrony of Vratsa.
While the exhibition is on display, guided educational talks will be offered to school students. These sessions will explore fascinating facts about the life and work of this distinguished Bulgarian National Revival figure, as well as the liberation of Burgas from Ottoman rule. The programme offers young people an excellent opportunity to engage with history in a lively and interactive way.
Educational talks are available by prior booking during the following periods:
• 9–20 February 2026
• 2–26 March 2026
