A Scientific Volume Dedicated to the Memory of Professor Ivan Karayotov to Be Presented in Burgas

On Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at 6:30 p.m., a scholarly volume dedicated to the memory of the distinguished Burgas archaeologist and numismatist Professor Ivan Karayotov, DSc, will be presented in the Petya Dubarova Hall at the Sea Casino Cultural Centre in Burgas.
An internationally renowned scholar, Professor Karayotov led archaeological excavations in Pomorie, Nessebar, Sozopol, Golyamo Bukovo, Burgas, Ruen and Aytos. A mentor to two generations of Burgas archaeologists and an Honorary Citizen of Burgas, Ivan Karayotov left an indelible mark not only on the field of scholarship, but also on the hearts of hundreds of his students and friends.
He passed away on 30 January 2018, at the age of 76.
Work on selecting the research contributions to be included in a special volume dedicated to Professor Karayotov began in 2022. The contributions were collected in 2023, while 2024 and 2025 saw the completion of the academic editing, text preparation, pre-press production and printing. The resulting publication is Volume IX of Izvestiya na Burgaskiya Muzey (Proceedings of the Burgas Museum).
The volume brings together 30 scholarly studies, articles and research notes by Bulgarian and international scholars. They are organised into six sections: “Numismatics and Sigillography,” “Archaeology,” “Maritime Archaeology,” “Epigraphy,” “History,” and “Conservation and Restoration.”
All the contributions share a common geographical focus: the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, the region that held a special place in Ivan Karayotov’s heart.
The volume’s Editor-in-Chief is Professor Ivan Hristov, PhD, Deputy Director of the National History Museum in Sofia. The editors are Dr Igor Lazarenko, Director of the Regional History Museum in Varna; Dr Dragomir Grubov, Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America and Research Associate at the Institute of Nautical Archaeology; and Dr Milen Nikolov, Director of the Regional History Museum in Burgas.
Pre-press production, image processing and cover design were undertaken by Neli Nikiforova-Hristova and Tsvetana Ileva of the Regional History Museum in Burgas, together with Milka Yudova. The translations were prepared by Mila Midelieva of the Regional History Museum in Burgas and Dr Dragomir Grubov. The literary editing was carried out by Yana Slavyanska, and the cover artwork was created by Burgas-based artist Mitko Ivanov.
The volume was compiled by Dr Milen Nikolov.
The publication was funded by the Regional History Museum in Burgas and Burgas Municipality.
Volume IX of Izvestiya na Burgaskiya Muzey will be presented by Professor Ivan Hristov, Dr Igor Lazarenko and Dr Milen Nikolov.
