EPACT – Regional Historical Museum – Burgas participates in a cross-border project for archaeology and tourism

Bulgarian and Turkish experts met in Burgas to begin work on a joint 5-year plan for a common tourist destination. It will unite three important archaeological sites located in the Burgas and Kırklareli regions. These are the prehistoric settlement of Ashagapınar, the ancient and medieval city of Aquae calidae - Burgas Mineral Baths, and the Rusokastro fortress. The five-year plan will offer a comprehensive framework for the development, promotion and effective management of the three sites, ensuring their sustainability and offering intriguing experiences for archaeology enthusiasts and tourists. Part of the plan is the development of a roadmap for the establishment of a school for experimental archaeology, located in Aquae calidae.
The experts exchanged experiences and received guidance from Dr. Milen Nikolov – Director of RHM-Burgas, Krasimira Kostova – Director of OIM-Sredets, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimcho Momchilov – Head of the Archaeological Research in Aquae calidae. The event was opened in the hall of the Burgas Ethnographic Exhibition by the Deputy Mayor of Burgas Municipality – Manol Todorov, and the Deputy Mayor of Kameno Municipality – Ventsislav Tsenov. On the second day, the experts had the opportunity to visit the Akve Kalide exhibition and demonstration complex and to get acquainted on site with the progress in the archaeological research, which continues in November.

The meeting is part of the activities under the project BGTR0200042 – EPACT – Exploring the Past: Experimental Archaeology as a Catalyst for Tourism and Growth, funded by the European Union under the Interreg IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Bulgaria-Turkey. The lead organization for the implementation of this activity is the Regional History Museum – Burgas (PP2). Project partners are the Regional Directorate of Culture and Tourism Kırklareli (LP), the Regional History Museum – Burgas, the Public Education Center “Kırklareli Evlad-ı Fatihan” and the Municipality of Kameno.
