On May 9, 2024 (Thursday) at 11:00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Ethnographic Museum we will honor St. Nicholas Lethnyi – Summer St. Nicholas Day. The women from the Folklore Group "Tronki" - village Momina Church, Sredets municipality will make "Pepperuga" and "German" for rain and fertility - as it has been passed from generation to generation for 150 years. The professional folklore ensemble "Strandja" with its artistic director Mario Egov will also participate in the celebration.
The event is part of the program of Burgas Municipality for the first mass celebration of Summer St. Nicholas Day.
In the Bulgarian folk tradition, the summer St. Nicholas Day, also called "St. Nicholas Letni" and "Suhi St. Nicholas", is celebrated against hail and for causing rain. In the tronki settlements in Western Strandzha, the "Butterfly" custom is combined with "German" and is therefore richer, with more ritual faces. To hear the songs that are sung, to learn about "butterfly bread" and to see the clay figure of German, come to the Ethnographic Museum!
