Coin of Julius Caesar (Caius Julius Caesar) found in Aquae calidae, Burgas Mineral Baths
Author: Miroslav Klasnakov
The archaeological site Aquae calidae provides to modern science an enormous amount of monuments from ancient times. For various reasons, many of them still remain unsorted, as information about others can be found in many, but different subjects, scientific and popular publications. Most of the preserved artifacts belong to antiquity and medieval (and contemporary) numismatic material. They are made of copper, bronze, silver, gold and other advanced alloys for the production of coins.
During the cleaning and capping of the local mineral spring in 1910 by workers and hydro-engineers, between 3000 and 4000 coins were found inside.
In the winter of 1994, during the drying and cleaning of the mineral spring, workers together with archaeologists from RHM Museum found over 350 coins.
Most recently, in the period 2008-2015 while conducting regular archaeological research, several hundred coins are found during each season and the total number is over 1,000 coins.
Periodically throughout the XX century, and even today, coins with place of origin Aquae calidae continue to arrive in the museum on various occasions.
Today Aquae calidae coins are stored in the collections of several Bulgarian museums and various numismatic collections throughout the world. RHM Burgas has an enviable amount of this numismatic material (from V century BC to the reign of the recent Ottoman sultans and after), which is now in the process of sorting and systematizing.
In the winter of 1994, while cleaning the mineral spring, the researchers found a silver coin that is comparatively rare in the modern Bulgarian lands. The famous Roman general, statesman and lifelong dictator Julius Caesar (102 / 100-44 BC) has been depicted on the silver denar.
